Great British Road Trip

Brand
Vauxhall Collective

The Vauxhall Collective was one of the most ambitious commercially funded creative support schemes in the UK.

Winner of the 1st Vauxhall Collective bursary for Theatre.
The theme for all the winners was The Great British Road Trip.

We made thegreatbritishroadtrip.com:
an interactive online experience,
a game,
a series of interractive performances
a grand finale performance-come-party for the selected players,
And it was a design your own discovery road-trip around this green and pleasant land

"Mr Reeling’s assistants recall road trips of their youth, so often prompted by the necessity of arrival at big family events. Cousin Linda’s wedding in Poole, or “..........’s ....… in …………” (fill in blanks with title, name, occasion and location here).  These auspicious occasions would so often be twinned with unexpected visits to places of interest, strange half remembered museums, peculiar campsites, lesser spotted relatives and cetera. ….”

The website we made, provided information on some interesting attractions around Great Britain.
How many places of interest each participant visited, and when, was up to them and down to the road trip they wished to create.  But, the more of these sights that they visited and the more evidence of their trip that they posted on the website, the higher their score and better their chance of being invited to the final event in March 2009
"It was inspiring to consider the excellent and varied ideas and artists submitted” said Nina Steiger, Writers’ Centre Director of Soho Theatre “Gideon Reeling's proposal stood out for its playful, immersive take on the Vauxhall brief and their idea held the promise of a great adventure. Their work is fresh and imaginative as it invites audiences to become players, participants and adventurers through their stories.”

As part of its ongoing commitment to style and design, car company Vauxhall identified six of the brightest creative stars and gave them a commission,

Winners were supported financially to carry out projects, consequently raising their profile in the industry and in the media, and giving them the resources to fulfil their creative potential.

A host of leading industry opinion formers from arts institutions including the Photographers’ Gallery, BFI, Film London, Crafts Council, Donmar Warehouse, The Hayward, ICA, London College of Fashion and Central St Martins formed a “Style Council” to make the decision on the commissions.

"The Vauxhall Collective is a unique chance for established figures in the creative industries to support young UK talent. A commission with this level of financial backing can really make a difference to someone's career," Amanda Nevill, BFI
